Ruined Wooden Flooring – Then Replaced By Carpet Tiles

Its true, pets are not just for Christmas. Like children, they need plenty of love, care and attention from their owners. Especially when it comes to mans best friend, the dog. I just didnt realise the extend I had to go to until i got my Labrador puppy, named Max. He scratched my living room floor. The moment he came into the house, the laminated hardwood flooring was scratched from his paws. What am I going to do? This is no good. I cant take him back to the pet store now. I can get away with it as it is, but the floor needs to be sorted before he comes back inside with us. Il have to change the flooring if I cant repair it. Now what would be the best solution in this situation? Wooden flooring is obviously not an option, as Id be back to square 1. Getting a fitted carpet in will take time and cost theres the carpet plus getting a fitter in. I got in the car and ran down to the local flooring store.
One of the best decisions I made. The assistant in the store recommended to me carpet tiles for several reasons;
Quick and easy to lay
Cost effective, and no underlay needed
Can easily be replaced when my dog makes a mess or ruins a tile.
They can be laid over my existing wooden flooring, so I can revert back to that at a later date if I wish.
So I leave the store with all 80 nicely fit in the boot of the car. Once back in the room looking at the new office carpet tiles, although for the living room. I put one tile down, then another, and another….. Now within 10 min the whole floor was laid, with just the border tiles that needed cutting to get a perfect fit. I probably laid the whole room in about 1 hour. Now that shows how simple it is, as Im no flooring expert.
Now the dog can do as he pleases in the room. Ive certainly learnt you should prepare for the arrival of any pet, when it come to your home decor. Especially when they are left alone in at home for hours when youre out maybe at work. Make sure your dog has toys to play with when you are out, and it will help prevent them chewing something they shouldnt be such as your new couch.

There are three basic types of timber flooring available to install in a home; and they include, solid hardwood, engineered, and laminate. Each option has its pros and cons, and which type you get really depends on your needs and your budget.

Solid is, obviously, solid timber all the way through, from top to bottom. It is similar to any other stick of lumber that is cut straight off of the log.

There are no artificial materials manufactured into the lumber, it is just all natural, which is what makes it so appealing. Every piece is unique and it lasts a long time if you take care of it.

Hardwood comes either unfinished or prefinished. Unfinished lumber tends to be a little cheaper than prefinished, but does require immediate light sanding, staining, and sealing after installation.

With prefinished, you can walk on it right after installation. With unfinished, you need to limit usage until it has been sealed.

After sealing, you will need to wait at least 48 hours for the sealant to dry. Even then, additional coats may be required.

With unfinished, the advantage is you can stain it and seal it to your exact specification. With prefinished, the advantage is the quick turnaround time.

One popular hardwood is bamboo. This material is actually a grass rather than lumber, but is still considered a hardwood.

Bamboo is highly valued for its environmentally-friendly qualities. This must be nailed to timber sub-boards.

Unlike the other lumber board options, it cannot be installed straight on concrete or on top of your existing boards. Because of the nail-down requirement, it is recommended that you hire professional floor installers.

Floating boards are easy to install yourself with a few tools. As long as your existing floor is level and stable, you can install the floating materials right on top.

Engineered flooring’s greatest weakness is its thin top layer. The finish layer is about an eighth of an inch thick, and can probably be sanded down once or twice if need be.

Before you attempt to sand your flooring, whether it is the real stuff or engineered, you should consult a reliable professional and seek their advice. Laminate boards are not real lumber, but is comprised of a thin top layer of resin-infused paper, all on top of a wood-chip composite.

It is technically made of lumber, but not a solid piece of lumber. It is made of millions of wood chips compressed and glued together to make a resin.

Among the advantages of laminate flooring are its scratch-resistance surface and the fact that it works well in topically moist environments. This means you can put it in places like bathrooms and kitchens.

Replacing Flooring: Prepare the Old Before Installing the New

You purchased new flooring for your home. You’re excited about how the room will look. You have a limited budget, so you plan on installing the new surface yourself. Carpet and carpet padding can be pulled away from the base or sub-floor, rolled up, and taken to the curb or the dump. Tile or vinyl can be chipped away and pried off the sub-floor, loaded into a garbage can and taken out, too. But what then? Is that all there is to preparing for installation? Unfortunately, the answer is a no. If lining it up, connecting it, and fastening it down was all there was to it, there would be far fewer contractors making a living. The primary step in any replacement is removing the old material and flaws first.

The key to lovely, long lasting flooring reaches not over the surface but under it.

Laying new tile is time consuming enough without having to replace it again in just a few years, because the sub-floor or slab wasn’t prepared properly, and cracks, sliding, or snapping of material has wasted time, effort, and money.

The surface receiving the new material must be clean and absolutely smooth. Even small grains of dirt or sand can void a seal or connection, as well as create gaps and bulges that stress the new material. If placing tile, for instance, over old, worn hardwood planks, ensure the seams between the boards are sealed level; nails and screws are sunk below the surface of the wood and filled with a wood fill compound, and the boards themselves are level, well sanded, and thoroughly cleaned, including washing—not just sweeping or dusting. Also, ensure the receiving surface is completely dry; allow sufficient time for air drying before laying a new surface on top of it.

Especially in older homes, vinyl tiles and linoleum was laid under the edges of walls and cabinets. Removing that layer can destabilize the structure and should be avoided. Instead,cut the old tile or linoleum as close to the resting edge as possible; if the material is soft enough, carefully angle a retractable blade down and in to cut the material under the edge but leave the remaining floor material in place. Gently slip the new flooring just under the structure’s edge to begin installation. Some experts recommend not using glue on the first one-half inch of the new floor material to allow removal next time the material is replaced, but always leave the original under the bulk structure alone.

When replacing entry way flooring, special challenges occur. Because the door frame is set into the wall structure, the new wood, tile, or carpet must allow the door to open and close fully, lest problems arise. You should replace the sub-floor or build up the sub-floor to allow proper spacing and depth. If that’s not possible, trimming the bottom of the door, if possible, is the next option. If you have a metal door, you may have to remove the entire door frame and adjust the opening to allow a higher floor clearance, depending on the floor material you’ve chosen.

If you choose to raise the door frame, you may want to install a support post under the house or otherwise brace the house frame. Tensions and tolerances are determined for the original framing configuration, and adjusting the height of a doorway may degrade stability without the additional support.
